It was an incredibly phenomenal Peruvian dining experience in Mongrel Bitchen! Love the relaxing vibes and the friendly staff. Wow, the foods are heavenly delicious! The beef tongue and the home-made kangaroo pastrami were absolutely palatable! Also, love the choice of snapper in the Peruvian ceviche. The Melbourne-made craft beer of choc-coconut stout is surprisingly smooth and luscious! Fell in love with this stout. This restaurant is highly recommended!
Superb food and drink and service to match.<br/ <br/ We had long anticipated the opening of Mongrel for some time given to their promise of traditional Peruvian food with some local fusion. And they didn’t disappoint. <br/ <br/ At first glance they have a dark, grungy feel with some very cool art work. From the moment we sat down we were greeted by friendly staff who exuded a feeling of gentle warmth and fervour reminiscent of someone genuinely enjoying what they do and this feel flowed throughout the restaurant from service to food. <br/ <br/ We chose the tequeno’s (starter), tongue tacos and the cerviche (mains) matched with locally sourced beers recommended by the friendly staff. The tequeno’s were a beautiful crunchy, crispy, salty batter wrapped around a soft, chewy combination of mozzarella, haloumi and jalapenos that works brilliantly. <br/ <br/ The cerviche is a splendid blend of salt, spice, sweetness and acidity. With slices of fresh local fish and octopus, soothed in zesty lime juice and paired with a lightly burnt, sweet potato; the balance of flavours is perfect. <br/ <br/ Finally, the tongue tacos. To be fair we were unsure about the tongue but were pleasantly surprised by perfectly cooked, salty, crispy but soft centred portion of tiny tongue pieces. The tongue was accompanied by a mild spicy green salsa and a side of chopped coriander and onion that left us wanting more. <br/ <br/ They have the feel of group of people who love and believe in what they do and that shines through into the flavour and balance of their foods. Five stars all the way.
There is a great range of food here, a lot of unique and vegan options as well, all delicious!! Combined with a great range of icy cold beers and friendly staff.
The food at Mongrel is amazing! Value for money portion sizes. We ordered 6 dishes to share between 3 and almost couldn't finish them all as we were so full! My favourite is the tongue tacos! The only thing I'd recommend is adding a few more vegetarian options to the menu.
