McKelvies - Halifax

The meal was hearty and delicious. The atmosphere was relaxing. The service was quick. Excellent value for money.

We dined at McKelvies for dinner and were disappointed with our experience. My baked haddock arrived lukewarm and drenched in butter, while the waitress suggested mashed potatoes over roasted, but the entire meal lacked flavor. My husband's seafood platter was pricey, yet also lukewarm and lacking taste. Perhaps it was an off day, but we would not recommend this restaurant. Despite its hype, it fell short of expectations.

Stopped in for lunch and the place was pretty empty. We were promply seated and my girlfriend went to the washroom I got waters from our waitress. We then ordered a couple cocktails, she got a beer and I got a sinful Cesar which is basically a Cesar with an oyster on top. It was $12 and I was slightly disappointed but the fact that they gave me basically the leafy top of celery and not a whole stock. The waitress dropped off some bread and we placed our orders. My girlfriend was eating bread and ended up finding a piece of stone or shellfish in the bread. We didn't bother saying anything about it. Our waitress really didn't have it together I think it was a bad day for her. We both ordered the seafood chowder to start and only one came out had to ask for the second one and when the second one came in didn't have the biscuit that came with the first one. Seafood chowder was delicious ! It had shrimp scallops haddock or cod and salmon. There was some confusion with my order I had ordered a side of fries and they didn't come out when the rest of the food came out. I had a lobster roll and my girlfriend at the crabcakes both of these dishes were excellent my lobster roll had plenty of Lobster and just the right amount of mayonnaise and seasoning. I finished my roll fairly quickly and ended up canceling the fries. My girlfriends crabcakes were also good and good flavor. Overall I would say they need to have a better system in place because there are only three tables sat in the entire restaurant. It's a fairly expensive restaurant so I would expect the service to be a little better. I would return and give them a second try because the food was good.

Highly overrated. Seafood platter very disappointing. Dirty WINDOWS

It was very busy when we arrived. We had to remind our server a few times on forgot items that were ordered. Especially the oysters. He was however very engaging and personable so he was sincere when things were overlooked. Would always come back and recommend the food to everyone.
