I was there for a late lunch. Maybe I was there after 3pm, so i was charged with dinner price instead of lunch one. Even so, it is still comparably cheap (under AU$15).I have been to Ethiopia twice and used to live in Washington DC in U.S. (where there are the largest Ethiopian/Eritrean population in North America), so I am quite familiar with Ethiopian food. I especially love their "vegetarian messab" - a vegetarian combo plate that features at least 5 different vegetable dishes, many are spicy and all are flavorful. Here at Cafe Lalibela, they also served a "vegetarian combination plate." There are five different dishes in this combo dish (please see the pictures). I think they are flavorful and tasty and comparable to places I ate before in Ethiopia and North America. They do not tone down the spiciness level and make it too bland. While Footscray is a bit far from Melbourne city center, it is a nice place to try different ethnic food if you happen to be in this area.
The food is wonderfully tasty, accompanied by the soft and fluffy injera bread. This is a local restaurant for me and l keep coming back for the great food at very reasonable prices. The owner is welcoming and friendly and l have never had a bad meal.
5 dishes between 4 of us was way too much. Every dish had its own flavour and it was just incredible.
I had lunch today and had the lamb Tibs served on Injera. The service was quick as l was the first in. The meal itself was fine perhaps a little strong with the lemon juice. The bread was fresh and the beer cold so overall for 20.00 including beer and tip l would say this is a great place for those on a budget but who still want more than the done to death Pho in the area
