Excellent small restaurant, beautiful attentive staff and an innovative menu
Punching above it’s weight in the seaside town of Padstein, it doesn’t get more convivial than this. The environs are cosy as in a we’re sitting around a barrel in a fishmonger’s kitchen kind of way. Make no mistake seafood is challenging. Pleasing everyone is difficult. On one hand you have fruits de mer served on a platter of ice while on the other we have dishes that delight without overwhelming the star of the show. If you’re not squeamish about prodding what goes on your plate then you yourself can select the clearest eyed and reddest gill piscine produce this side of the seashore. Be prepared as some of the crustaceans can nip back. The mackerel was a revelation. It had umami without being overly unctuous. I sensed charcoal flavours on the crunchy skin but did not see a BBQ grill in the kitchen. Order 2 so you don’t have to share. They eschewed beer batter in preference to tempura and my son’s hake was the better for it. My wife and I are still talking about that seafood stew. It was recommended by another patron and as we were tucking into it with gusto, saw others observing us and uttering that infamous line from ‘When Harry met Sally’. The waitstaff are absolute jewels but not magicians. Book early. I hear tables are still available in 2020.
Service great staff all very friendly and helpful with us. bloke convinced us to try first oyster raw and deep fried. then skalopps, Tempoura-Kid, krabbenkema and garn on the rasen were absolutely delicious, the sides were also excellent, very expensive but oh good experiences are ten times worth what money is at the end of the day.
Great food and very friendly service. we loved the little and intimate feeling of the place, but with more lively/youthful music and vibe, which it meant that it was not in all the feeling of stuff. eating was a little slow, not coming anywhere when you're in a hurry.
