It’s owned by Cambodians who maintain their great tradition in NZ of baking NZ’s best pies. Visiting from Auckland I am exposed to a lot of Asian bakeries and I highly rate this place. I had the beef and cheese roll, bacon and cheese scone and steak and curry pie. All very good. Forget Copeland’s which provides very staple/stodgy pies without any umami flavour. If you are road trip to the West Coast or Abel Tasman park stop off here near the Hunting and Fishing in Richmond and grab some pies. They won’t disappoint.
As self proclaimed pie expert, I have a number of favourite pies and bakeries scattered around the country. And Pastry Palace Bakery is definitely one of them! A huge selection of options are offered here from sweet to savoury. Every item is cooked with care and that is reflected in the flavours and smells. A couple of years ago I first wandered into this store, looking for something yummy. They had just released their new Smoked Fish Pie and of course I had to give it a go, and I fell in love immediately! I have since continued to go back and get this pie (As well as the occasional cream doughnut), but this is one of my favourite pies in the region. A well named spot as the food which comes from this kitchen is certainly worthy of royalty!!
