One meal one drink sort of place, and they do it well! The Schonegger Kase Alm has a restaurant situated above their cheese shop: the restaurant is set up with lots of long tables and long benches and simple table setting. The restaurant is filled with locals, hikers and the restaurant cat and has a laid back vibe. There is a till where you order your drink all they serve is German White Wine (excellent! , beer (alcohol free and alcoholic... and some fizzy drinks. You are then seated to your bench: a small salad is served whilst the waitresses dish out the only thing on the menu, Käsespätzle. This is topped with Crispy onions and served on a plate. This is all prepared on the long side of the restaurant, (Käsespätzle are kept in a big hot soup pot , very basic but organised. Their only dish is, as we’d had hoped, deliciously cheesy and filling. Salad is nicely prepared with home made dressing. Service is friendly and serviceable. We were speaking with an older waitress and told her all about our travels we were planning on doing the days ahead. She gifted us three restaurant made CDs with local music, very kind! Price wise, this place will cost you under 15€ a person, including a drink, Käsespätzle (small and regular portions available and a salad. Very reasonable!
After touring New Schwanstein we were driving the Bavarian countryside and our tour guide took us to what he called ... the Cheese Farm for a lunch. Ok, this could be interesting. The Schonegger Kas Alm Cheese Farm) is located in the picturesque Bavarian country side which in itself makes for a pleasant road side stop. Add to it the opportunity for a farm style lunch of Bavarian cheeses, sausages and a local bier and you have the makings for a perfect afternoon lunch. Our private tour group consisted of only 6 people so we didn 't have a bus load of folks forming up lines, Upon arrival we surveyed the site and knew immediately were were in for something very special. The visual setting of farm buildings, cheese store, farm displays and dairy cows was picturesque and inviting. Our Guide arranged for our family style lunch which included a sampling of bread, cheese and sausages with our choice of drinks. I chose a local dark beer which was excellent and a compliment to the lunch fare. Good thing we had a driver because the local bier was to good to stop at just one. After sampling the lunch offerings some of us went to the store for take outs. I selected a half dozen or so cured sausages and some fresh cut cheese that accompanied us for lunch on tours for a few days. We have a very good insulated travel lunch bag that served us very nicely for this purpose. The sausages were some of the best we found in Bavaria and we have nothing like them here in the USA. After lunch, time for photos which are posted. For visitors convenience there are very clean restrooms. This was a very pleasant and memorable experience and we would definitely revisit Schonegger Kas-Alm. Should you be visiting in the Neu Schwanstein or the Zugspitzen Mountain area and have time you may want o consider a stop at ... the Cheese Farm”
Stopped on our day trip with Mario from Pure Bavaria Tours. Enjoyed a wonderful selection of various cheeses with bread, beer, and wine. If you love pate/foie gras, try the Zwiebellerberwurst. Yum! Take home some travel size bath products as well.
Our final stop on a day trip from Munich with Pure Bavaria Tours, Schonegger Kase Alm was heaven on a plate. A sharing plate of meats and cheeses with rustic bread and a bottle of our new favourite drink dark beer. I'm a big fan of farm shops and enjoy seeing the obvious passion the owners and staff have for their unique products. We bought a rather large amount to bring home (thank goodness for traveling within the EU! and Christmas Eve's wine and cheese night was especially tasty and upped the game for next year!
