It had been several years since having a chance to return and I was happy to see/ taste that their kolache's were as yummy as I remembered. I tried a new kolache that I hadn't before- (pecan and cream cheese? DELICIOUS! Pro tip- they sell day old kolaches, in an assorted bag, for half price!
I'm lucky enough to live about six minutes from either Dos Gatos location. I often choose WonderWorld as the parking's so much easier, but this original spot is still serving excellence. The Czech dough's straight from my northern childhood, delicate and sweet as opposed to the ubiquitous tx pig in a blanket which is a little more like a dinner roll. Polish sausage/kraut is one of my favorites and is still in top form here. The turkey sausage, cheese jalapeño was beautiful; very nice flavor and pleasantly different from the standard tx version. Generously sized and stuffed. The vegetarian sausage was tasty, plus they packed so many jalapeños atop that I think many wouldn't notice the difference anyway. Mr R actually thought the veggie patty WAS the real meat, and he's a shameless carnivore so don't be afraid to try one. It was a more compact serving overall than the turkey, but thoroughly enjoyable. Mr R chose our sweet kolache as always, and went for raspberry this time. I honestly believe you can not make a bad choice in their fruit/cheese selections, they're all so good. The only thing I'd change about this location is the convenience of traffic, but there is a reason they've made it this long. Great stuff, fair price.
Delicious kolaches in the San Marcos area! Super friendly staff! The ambiance was cozy and quaint. Highly recommend this place for soft, fresh, and delicious kolaches.
There is not one menu item that is bad here! Everything is so tasty and the staff is always so friendly. I miss living in San Marcos so much because of this spot alone y'all.
I am not a kolache expert, but I am something of an expert in doughnuts, and kolaches are like the special Texas-Czech version of donuts. I've had a few kolaches before my visit here, and these were head and shoulders above the rest. Soft and fluffy but not gummy or mushy, which a good balance of filling to dough. Poppy seed is the super traditional flavor, but there is a variety of sweet options and you just can't go wrong with any of them. The savory options add some more Texas flavors, and they're like a breakfast sandwich wrapped up in an easy to eat ball. Some of them are a bit greasy, but that's attributable to the breakfast meats inside. The coffee is great too, but that's not why you're here. The location near the University means this place does a pretty consistent business through the morning.
