I really wanted to like this place, but the coffee and food were underwhelming The viennese melange was mild and didn't have much caffeine.
The coffee here is excellent! That alone earns top marks from me. The atmosphere of the place is pretty cool too.
Picture an Austrian themed strudel & coffee house in the middle of Vancouver's Chinatown district decorated in a semi-stark, Kraftwerk meets Chinese theme. The storefront has a great red & white graphic featuring the face of Baron Klaus Eric von Hochgotz complete with Chinese characters. It definitely caught my eye while driving along Pender Street and I told myself this is a place I'll have to check out! (I'm always on the lookout for a new independent coffee house. There's just way too many Starbucks places in this city and it's time to give business to the independent, more unique places in our city.)I didn't meet Klaus but the fellow behind the counter assured me that he does exist and is a trained chef with a background in the cruise ship industry who has a fondness for China and its culture. The three different strudels (2 sweet & 1 savoury) my family ordered were excellent. The coffee was decent but not "out of this world" but I'd still go back for the food, plus this place is quirky enough that it's a nice break from your standard issue coffee house offerings.
The host working there, Jensen, was very friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating! The food came quickly and we tried the gulasch, sausage and kraut and finally the amazing Apfelstrudel! We will be back! ????????
