I was a Kyoto house sushi regular 2020 and was excited for AYCE sushi post pandemic... And then it closed. I finally gave Oishi Maki a try today, and I wish I had gone sooner. Great rolls, lots of fish and veg inside, great selection on the lunch menu. Looking forward to going again and bringing friends.Food: 5/5
I recently visited a sushi restaurant located in historic downtown Whitby, and while the experience had its highlights, it left much to be desired. The restaurant boasted a wide and varied selection of sushi rolls, including some unconventional options with ingredients like bacon or fried chicken. While these off-brand rolls were intriguing, they failed to impress and fell short of being culinary home runs. One aspect that immediately struck me was the quality of the water served. A simple glass of water should be refreshing and clean-tasting, but unfortunately, it had an unpleasant hint of soap residue. This oversight in basic cleanliness left a negative impression right from the start. The ambiance of a restaurant plays a significant role in the overall dining experience, and unfortunately, this establishment fell short in that department as well. The choice of music was questionable at best, and my companions and I found ourselves more inclined to mock it rather than enjoy it. It seemed out of touch with the restaurant's atmosphere and didn't complement the dining experience.Despite these disappointments, I must acknowledge that the dynamite rolls, a staple of any sushi restaurant, were well-executed. The flavors were adequate, although they lacked the wow factor that would elevate them to a memorable level. It was evident that the kitchen had some skill, but it fell short in terms of consistency and innovation. In light of the above, I believe it is time for this sushi restaurant to step up its game. With the growing historic downtown Whitby, patrons have come to expect more from their dining experiences. It's crucial for the establishment to either revamp its menu, enhance the quality and creativity of its dishes, and invest in staff training to ensure consistency. Moreover, addressing the issues with cleanliness and ambiance would greatly contribute to creating a more enjoyable atmosphere.Overall, my visit to this sushi restaurant was a mixed bag. While some aspects showed promise, others fell short, leaving me feeling underwhelmed. I hope the establishment takes this feedback into account and makes the necessary improvements to either fit in with the evolving dining scene of downtown Whitby or consider moving on to new endeavors.Kid-friendliness: Despite the shortcomings of the sushi restaurant, one aspect that stood out was the attentive staff. From the moment we entered, they greeted us with warm smiles and promptly seated us. Throughout our meal, they were attentive to our needs, checking in regularly to ensure we had everything we needed. They were knowledgeable about the menu, offering recommendations and answering our questions. Despite the restaurant's other shortcomings, the staff's professionalism and attentiveness added a positive touch to the overall dining experience.
