Avaliação da contribuiçãoI was driving south on Leslie and my eye caught a sign for Fish and Chips. It had been a while since I had a good fish even though I have been to my local place, Stanley's Fish and Chips, because he makes damned fine fries a number of times. I went in and placed my order. On my way to the washroom (which would never fit a wheelchair) I noticed a hand written sign for Homemade Clam Chowder. This being one of my all time comfort foods I could not resist. I am glad I did. This was quite probably the finest New England Style Clam Chowder I have had outside of Boston. The broth was thick, there were large chunks of Clam in there and it was topped with Bacon (not the fake stuff, real honest to God BACON). I would go back to this place just for this. The fish came afterwards and the only negative thing I could say about this meal was that the fish was very thin. It was perfectly cooked and the batter was crisp and not at all greasy. I would have paid $15 for a thicker piece of fish but at $10 I guess that was a deal. There are places that I have been to that charge upwards of $20+ for this type of meal. These places I speak of would do well to learn from this Chef. I asked how long he had been there and he told me 15 years. Every sign in the place was done by hand and prices were updated by scribbling out the old price in favour of the new. I thought to myself that this place was in bad need of a makeover. I am glad that I found this place and if you decide to go, make sure to have the Clam Chowder.
The halibut was tasty. Chips were deffinately subpar. We had scallops and calimari. Scallops were cooked perfectly but we're just OK. Calimari was spicy and quite good.
What a lovely, understated little place to have fish and chips! We dropped in there for lunch after a recommendation from a friend and we're glad we did! My husband and I ordered haddock and chips from the lunch menu, which was an astonishingly low $4.99 each! The whole meal including a couple of soda drinks came to $14.99, and the haddock and chips were absolutely delicious as well as being easily as big as some of the other fish and chip restaurants we have been to. We received a warm welcome and the haddock was cooked to perfection, crispy batter, just the right amount and flaky and tender inside. It has a reasonably sized sit-down section, a basic decor and, although the menus were all written on paper and posted on the wall, the back of the restaurant had some interesting tea towels from all over the UK on the walls, which was a nice touch. Our meal was cooked fresh and the condiments were perfect, I asked for HP sauce and got a new bottle delivered straight to the table. The chef/waiter was lovely and this place is highly recommended by us. The only one gripe was that the chips were not really chips, but more like fries, however, they were tasty as well. We would definitely go back there again.
Fish was dry. Halibut. Is that possible? . Fries were good. Homemade tartar sauce was um, disappointing and flavorless. You have to pay for packaged tartar sauce. we did take out . Service was wanting. this was take out . they forgot the coleslaw for our order. And the napkins. Each time they had to be called from the back to ask for these things. They do not take mastercard. Only visa. Poor. :
Excellent specials and well worth the money. We ate in. The meal was hot and the batter stayed crispy; even after it was hit with malt vinegar. The mushy peas needed to cook longer, but they were ok. I hope you have the same experience as us and we are definitely going back soon!!!!
