Walking through the old part of Muggia on a quiet afternoon with only a few shops open, I walked into Pane e Pizza and left satisfied. Read on for details. Occupying only a few square meters on a corner, and with only a few tables to sit, there were a couple of pies already cooked behind the glass. Pizza with olives were the closest to what I was looking for and I took two of the thin slices, still almost hot from the oven. What can I say? It was good...not amazing, but just what I needed: crust on the thinner side with a nice chew and a topping that was not too heavy. Two slices and a Diet Cost came to 6 Euro. It was just what I needed.
This is a place we often go to when in Muggia when we want a quick meal or when we arrive late from somewhere. It's not the best pizza in town, but it's good enough, cheap enough, quick enough, and you can't really fault the opening times either (they are open from before lunch until after dinner). Today was really no different, we run late for breakfast and were fancying some slightly different bread to have for lunch, so we though we'd go there and ask for pizza focaccia same base as pizza, but with just oil and oregano as toppings. Fully aware that this was not on the menu, we thought that since the place was empty it wouldn't be too difficult to cater to us. We first asked for just one, and then for 2 more to be made. With the first one, the lady in there, was a bit unsure about it, trying to complain, but I quickly told her that I had had one from there the night before (which I did) so she complied (I also found out that the owner was in the place, so that may have been why she didn't argue too much), then asked me how much I was charged for it the day before, €3.00, and when I asked if the price was right she said that the person who charged me last night was the actual pizza maker so he would have known. When the first one was in the oven we decided to get a couple more and asked for them, by then the owner had left, and the lady behind the counter complained that since they're not on the menu they shouldn't really be making it, and that they offered other alternatives (deep pan focaccia with various toppings on), but since she had already one in the oven she couldn't really refuse to make 2 more. We were glad that she made it, but thought that her attitude was really uncalled for: we are still being charged for it, accordingly to what goes on it and the time it takes to cook it. If they don't want to cater for things outside the menu (every other pizzeria I have been to in Italy does accommodate menu changes) they should make that clear.
